New HP Coupon for $50 Off any Laptop $599 or More

There’s  a new coupon from HP for this week in which you can get $50 off of any custom order HP laptop purchased via that costs $599 or more.  The coupon code to be used for this discount is: MU1743

The coupon also works on desktops in case you weren’t into portability or need something with as much power as possible.  The details on this coupon include the fact the HP Spectre XT series is excluded along with the HP 2000 budget series of laptops.  The coupon works through until 4/14/2013 or 1,500 uses, whichever comes first.

Some HP laptops we recommend and that this coupon would work on are the following:

Note that for all of the prices above there is an “Instant Discount” already built into the starting price, when you use the coupon code you get the coupon discount along with the instant discount so the deal is stackable.  For example, the popular ENVY dv6t-7300 right now starts at $579.99 before any upgrades.  If I add on the recommended Full HD 1920 x 1080 option for $150 the price jumps up to $799 before coupon.  Then add on the $50 coupon code and the price falls down to $749 for the total.  A screenshot of the shopping cart can be seen below that has the specs and price:

The price of $749.99 for this configuration that includes an Intel Core i7 Quad Core processor and 1080p screen isn’t too bad, but for anyone wanting to do some gaming we’d recommend adding in one of the Nvidia graphics card options such as the Nvidia 635M or 650M.  The 650M would bump the price up to $949.99 while the cheaper 635M would put the price at $874.99.  For anyone that’s a student and needs something more portable and with tablet functionality, the HP ENVY X2 convertible for $599.99 after coupon is definite a deal to consider.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 now Available with New Nvidia 750M GPU

image13Nvidia recently announced their new 700 series lineup of mobile graphics cards and said they would soon be available inside manufacturer systems, and that is indeed the case as the Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 gaming oriented notebook is now available to configure with the Nvidia 750M graphics card.  The Nvidia 750M is an update to the 650M graphics card, however as Ars Technica notes the technology is essentially the same in these cards and the main advantage of the 750M card is the fact it has a higher clock speed and also supports what’s called “GPU Boost 2.0”.  GPU Boost 2.0 is equivalent to Intel’s Turbo Boost, the feature will allow gamers to overclock the GPU so long as sensors detect there is enough power being provided by the system and that the temperatures aren’t too hot already.

While it might seem unexciting given the hardware technology is essentially the same between the 600 and 700 series of Nvidia GPUs, the company is still touting a 15 – 25% performance improvement between equivalent cards such as the 650M and 750M.  If that holds true in real world performance it’s certainly nothing to sneeze at, but right now the price of the Y500 with the Nvidia 650M and 1920 x 1080 display is $849 compared to a $1,299 price for the Y500 with the Nvidia 750M and the rest of the specs equivalent.  Is it worth the $450 premium to get the Nvidia 750M?  No way, unless you don’t care about price and just want the latest technology.  Wait a couple of weeks and we should see prices drop as Lenovo includes all models in its marketing, a price difference of $50 – $100 would make upgrading to the Nvidia 750M worth it.

Vizio 15.6" 1080p Ultrabook $569.99 from TigerDirect

Intel recently announced that they’re working with manufacturers to get the price point of Ultrabooks down to $599 by the holidays of 2013, but for those who don’t want to wait you already have some options.   Case in point, TigerDirect is selling the 15.6” Vizio CT15-A1 Ultrabook for only $569.99 via their eBay store.   The specs on this model for sale are as follows:

  • Screen: 15.6” 1920 x 1080 resolutio
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-3317U Processor 1.7GHz
  • Memory: 4 GB DDR3 RAM
  • 128GB Solid-State Hard Drive
  • 15.6-Inch Screen
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
  • Storage: 128GB SSD
  • Ports: 2 USB 3.0,  1 Headphone out/Microphone-in combo jack, HDMI
  • Dimensions: Width: 14.9″ x Thickness: 0.68″ x Depth: 9.9″
  • Weight: 3.96 lbs
  • Battery Life: 6 hours

Under 4lbs for a 15.6” screen laptop is pretty impressive, add to that the Full HD 1920 x 1080 screen and you have quite a bargain at $569.99 for impressive features.  The one knock against this model is the fact the keyboard isn’t so great, but if you can get past that then the price is certainly right.

Dell Inspiron 17 with Intel Core i3 and HD+ Screen for $499

Dell has a discount this month on the Inspiron 17 desktop replacement style laptop for $499 with decent enough specs to provide enough power for the average home user.   The Inspiron 17 features a 17.3” size display with HD+ 1600 x 900 resolution, an Intel Core i3 processor and 500GB hard drive.  The one thing somewhat lacking on this deal is the fact you only get 4GB of RAM, we’d recommend upgrading to at least 6GB to smoothly run the Windows 7 OS you get with this deal configuration.

The Inspiron 17 is a budget oriented laptop but it receives kudos for its design and above average consumer build by publications such as Laptop Magazine.  The 1600 x 900 screen is rated well, of course we’d all prefer to have a Full HD 1920 x 1080 screen on a laptop of this size but with the cost at $499 you can’t expect to get top of the line components.  For most, the 1600 x 900 screen will provide ample viewing real estate.  The port selection is pretty good, as you would expect give the laptops size, you get two USB 2.0 ports, DVD burner, two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, Ethernet, 6-in-1 media card reader and a combination headphone / microphone jack.  You also get a built-in web camera and microphone.  The $499 pricing lasts until the end of April, so no rush needed, you can sit and ponder this deal if you like!

Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display Drops to $1,299

First of all let’s state that it’s understandable if $1,299 doesn’t sound like much of a deal for a laptop since it’s still way above the average selling price of a PC.  However, consider the fact that this price of $1,299 is for a 13” MacBook Pro with Retina display new in box is the lowest ever for any model with the much lauded Retina Display and it becomes a little more interesting.  The sale comes via and the price for this particular configuration with Intel Core i5 2.5GHz processor, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 13.3” 2560 x 1600 display is $200 less than what Apple is offering and $150 less than on Amazon.

The one downside to this configuration is the rather small 128GB SSD that’s included, but if you’re used to storing files “in the cloud” then you can supplement your storage using the Apple iCloud or Dropbox.  This model is the latest from Apple and what’s being sold is not a refurb, it’s brand new in box.  There are tons of reviews on the MacBook Pro 13” with Retina Display but a couple of the best can be found at The Verge and

New HP Coupon, $100 Off Pavilion TouchSmart 15z SleekBook

HP has issued a new coupon this week for $100 off the purchase of any customized Pavilion TouchSmart 15z Sleekbook purchased from  Just use coupon code NB3273 at checkout to get the discount, pricing starts at $649.99 before coupon on this model, so with the coupon code the price drops to $549.99.  The base model at that price comes with the following specs:

  • Screen: 15.6” 1366 x 768 resolution touchscreen display
  • Processor: AMD Quad Core A8-4555M
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon 7600G
  • Memory: 6GB RAM
  • OS: Windows 8 64-bit
  • Storage: 750GB 5400RPM HD
  • Battery: 4-cell Li-Ion
  • Web Cam: HP TrueVision HD Webcam
  • Ports: 2 USB 3.0; 1 USB 2.0; 1 HDMI; 1 RJ45; 1 headphone-out/microphone-in combo, media card reader

The main highlight with this laptop is the fact it is touchscreen and only weighs 4.6lbs and has a thinness of 0.83”, both excellent for a 15” machine.  The tradeoffs for the thinness is that you don’t get an optical drive, a fact that may disappoint some buyers looking at this size range.  Also, although the price point of $549.99 is very good for a touchscreen enabled laptop, you only get a 1366 x 768 resolution screen which is really quite low for a 15” machine.  That aside, the rest of the specs and style are decent for the price.   The AMD A8-4555M is going to offer performance that’s about on par with an Intel Core i3 processor, meaning it won’t offer blazing speed but will be more than capable for all typical user tasks.  Other notable features include color options of black, blue or red, a built-in web camera, HP CoolSense technology to control the fans, and of course the multi-touch screen.

Dell Inspiron Special Edition with Full HD Screen $599

Dell is back with another scorching deal on its popular and gaming capable Inspiron 15R Special Edition laptop (Inspiron 15R SE), this time around they’re selling it for $599 with an Intel Core i5 processor and Full HD 1920 x 1080 screen.  To get this deal just follow this link to the Inspiron 15R SE and use coupon code 7$LNL6S5C55CF? at checkout to see the price drop down to $599.99 on a model with the following specs:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5-3210M 2.5GHz Processor inspiron-15r-se_thumb2
  • Memory: 6GB DDR3 Memory
  • Storage: 750GB Hard Drive (5400 RPM)
  • Screen: 15.6″ 1080p LED Display
  • Graphics: 2GB AMD Radeon HD 7730M
  • Optical Drive: DVDRW Drive
  • Wireless: WiFi N
  • Camera: 1MP Webcam
  • Battery: 6-cell Battery
  • OS: Windows 8
  • Ports
    • 4x USB 3.0
    • 1x HDMI
    • 1x VGA

You really can’t beat these specs given the price point. A Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution screen is a very premium feature in and of itself, and then the Intel Core i5-3210M is a very capable processor and 6GB of RAM should be enough for most people, but you have the option to upgrade to 16GB if you need more. The Inspiron 15R SE might carry the branding of Dell’s “budget” category offering, but it’s a well built machine and has nice touches like a backlit keyboard, built-in web camera and stealth black design with aluminum finishes.

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix now “Expected” for April Arrival

For those that have been patiently awaiting the Lenovo ThinkPad Helix since its announcement at CES in January and promised February availability, your wait may soon be over.  At least according to the Lenovo twitter feed which posted the statement this weekend:

“Update on ThinkPad Helix: now expected to arrive in April. Apologies–rest assured we’re as eager to see it go on sale as you are.”

ThinkPad Helix

There are no exact insights into what’s causing the delay of this much anticipated laptop to tablet Windows 8 convertible, but we can only assume Lenovo is ironing out some glitches with hardware/firmware/software drivers as it makes its way through quality control.  Lenovo is known to be somewhat cautious on pushing a product out the door with any known issues, and given the spotlight and number of reviews we’re likely to see surrounding the ThinkPad Helix it’s likely they want to get things right first time around.

However, with that all said the Helix release is now much delayed and there’s still no confirmation of at what point in April the Helix will be available, nor that it’s guaranteed.  After all, “expected to arrive in April” isn’t exactly the type of verbiage that makes it sound we have an open and shut case here.   It seems like the recently announced ThinkPad T431s will beat the ThinkPad Helix out of the gate as the first ThinkPad device with touchpad integrated TrackPoint buttons.
