Lenovo Y480 and Y580 Details Emerge, Pre-Order for $999 at Sears

More details have emerged for the upcoming Lenovo Y480 and Y580 gaming laptops scheduled to be released at the end of April 2012.  Lenovo first announced the Y480 and Y580 at CES 2012, but not all of the detailed specs were known, such as which Intel processors and Nvidia graphics cards they would be equipped with.  That mystery is solved thanks to a few sources.

The Y480 actually went up for pre-order briefly on Amazon.com but was since taken down, the screenshot below taken at the time it was listed on Amazon shows the price to be $999:

Sears.com still has the particular model number 20934FU up for pre-order for $999.   The specs on this Y480 configuration are as follows:

Lenovo Y480

  • Model Number: 20934FU
  • Screen: 14” 1366 x 768
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-3610QM
  • Graphics:  Nvidia GT630M 1GB DDR5 memory
  • OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
  • Memory: 8GB DDR3
  • Storage: 750GB HD
  • Optical Drive: DVD-RW Burner
  • Battery: 6-cell with 3.5 hours battery life
  • Keyboard: Chiclet style, backlit
  • Wireless: Intel 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Di, Bluetooth

Sears has the availability date listed as April 9, 2012, less than 3-weeks away.  At CES 2012 it was indicated the Y480 would come equipped with an Nvidia GT 650M card so it’s strange to see a lesser graphics card listed, though it may be that on Lenovo.com you can configure a more powerful graphics card once this laptop is released.

A Chinese based website has released screenshots of the Y580 to prove some of the specs inside that include the new Kepler based Nvidia GTX 660M with fast GDDR5 memory:

Nvidia 660M graphics

The Y580 will also come with the Intel Ivy Bridge Core i7-3610QM processor clocked at 2.30GHz:

And probably the best news so far is the fact the Lenovo Y580 will come with a Full HD+ 1080p screen option (1920 x 1080 resolution display):

That’s certainly a big improvement over the much maligned 1366 x 768 resolution display we saw in the IdeaPad Y570 we reviewed.

The Y480 and Y580 will have essentially the same design as the current Y470 and Y570, which isn’t a bad thing as the design is contemporary and unique.  We’ve been big fans of the Lenovo Y series, they offer a budget friendly price for a portable gaming laptop.  There’s no doubt the Y480 and Y580 will garner a lot of attention and sell well.

Damnnnn guys thoose are killer specs
Im wondering if the gtx660 m on this laptop would be better then the gtx 560 m ti on a pc what do u think?
    Thanks for answering

    • It won’t have the same power as the gtx 560 ti, the memory interface on this is 128-bit while the desktop version is 256-bit, it’ll still be a great card relative to mobile graphics cards though.

according to benchmarks so far it will be a good 30% weaker.

Which is still very powerful; the GTX 660m will run all games on a mix of high/ultra settings at 1080p most likely; I had the GTX 560m and this 660m is supposed to be a good 15-25% more powerful and my 560m would run BF3 at 900p on all high settings; so this 660m can probably do 1080p and a mix of ultra/high settings. I would get a solid 30 min fps, 50 max. Never below 30; which is very playable.

I can only afford the y470p…………with going over my budget……this will be too expensive, but it looks like an award winner, though the battery life looks grim……..if there is an i5 intel version it would be the best I think….. I.E when it come down to battery life……..great looking laptop..
